Henry sent pictures of old friends for Edwin to look on in memory and in honor of the new year. He asks if Markham sent Senator Phelan a copy of Our Israefil with an autograph to be framed. Senator Phelan is putting the name and number plate on the Markham House. He was entertaining a group, the Helen Wills W.S. Tennis Champion. The college of Pacific wanted to know if Edwinsent picture and books on the French Catherdral at Lausanne to the college people. Bland. He is also working on Edwin's Biography.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
